I was in Cabo San Lucas last weekend and wasn’t able to post, so this week I am doing a special 2 part edition. 1 – Art of Peaceful Protest focus on the song “Land of Confusion”. 2 – I will highlight how a large resort in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico found a creative solution and learned to turn garbage into art.

“There’s too many men, too many people
Making too many problems
And there’s not much love to go around
Can’t you see this is the land of confusion?”
In 1981, Genesis released their song “Land of Confusion” and followed it’s release with a truly memorable video featuring puppets of the band members, Ronald and Nancy Regan, and a bunch of political and historical figures. The song itself comes across as pretty poppy and fun, with catchy lyrics and a strong beat. The video’s visual satire was truly entertaining to watch. It was easy to see that they were hitting on our shared frustrations and fear of the future, but the song is approachable and easy to connect to.
I don’t know if the message behind the song was truly understood by the kids in the 80s, but in 2006, the much angrier band ‘Disturbed’ remade the song with a clearly darker tone to it. I don’t know about other Gen-X’ers, but hearing the Disturbed version made the message sink in more deeply for me.

Here’s both versions. I’d love to hear how you feel about the different approaches.
Does one resonate more than the other?

**************PART TWO******** Turning Garbage into Art**************************
The first time we went to Cabo San Lucas, we noticed these beautiful blown glass hearts around the resort we were staying in, Pueblo Bonito Sunset Beach. It was explained to us that the resort had partnered with a local artist to repurpose the glass the resort had previously been throwing into the garbage. Israel Bautista now takes the castoff glass and turns them into stunningly beautiful glass hearts. The hearts themselves come in a wide variety of colors, styles, and sizes. They are incredibly eye-catching, especially the way they reflect light.
Such a great idea for recycling garbage and supporting their local community.

These hearts are now for sale all around Cabo and have really made the city shine.
